Over the past 24 hours, roughly $483 million in bitcoin and ether futures contracts were forced closed as doubts over the Federal Reserve’s upcoming rate decision pressured digital asset markets.
Ether traders suffered the most, seeing about $286 million in positions liquidated after ether dropped over 6% to around $2,350.
Bitcoin slipped about 3% to near $81,000, and the downturn extended to smaller tokens such as Solana, Dogecoin, and Zcash.
On Thursday, crypto prices tumbled, leading to the closure of nearly $483 million in bitcoin and ether futures over the previous day, with ether traders bearing the brunt.
Losses deepened Thursday morning as Fed rate uncertainty rattled markets. Bitcoin hovered near $81,000, down about 3% in 24 hours, while ether shed over 6% to roughly $2,350. XRP and Solana’s SOL each declined around 5%, and Dogecoin fell about 6%.
According to CoinGlass data from Asian morning hours, ether contracts made up about $286 million of liquidations versus $197 million for bitcoin. Ether declined 6.4% to $2,356, while bitcoin slipped 3.2% to around $81,000.
Liquidations occur when traders employing leverage lack sufficient collateral after a price swing, prompting exchanges to automatically close their positions. For instance, a trader using $1,000 to control a $10,000 position could be wiped out by a move of less than 10% against them.
Such forced exits can exacerbate a declining market, compelling traders to sell even if they’d prefer to hold.
Ether’s losses were greater despite its futures market being significantly smaller.
Outstanding ether contracts stood at roughly $30 billion compared with $52 billion for bitcoin. The liquidation numbers reflect the value of closed positions, not the actual cash losses of traders.
The selloff also hit smaller tokens. Solana futures saw about $31 million in liquidations as SOL dropped around 5.5%, while Zcash contracts accounted for nearly $19 million with ZEC falling about 13%.
