New U.S. House Legislation Aims to Create Task Force for Cryptocurrency Theft Investigations

    Published on:

A new legislative proposal in the U.S. House of Representatives seeks to establish a federal task force to oversee and coordinate investigations into cryptocurrency theft. The bipartisan bill, which includes support from key lawmakers, aims to address the growing issue of crypto-related crimes, such as fraud and hacking. The Federal Cryptocurrency Theft Task Force would be managed by the U.S. attorney general and would involve several federal agencies, including the FBI, DOJ, Treasury, and Homeland Security. Representative Lance Gooden, a Republican from Texas, and Representative Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat from New Jersey, are sponsoring the bill. Gooden emphasized the need for a coordinated strategy to combat the billions being stolen from Americans, stating that as digital assets shape the financial landscape, this legislation would safeguard consumers and bolster trust in the crypto space. The proposed task force aims to serve as the primary coordination point for preventing and investigating cryptocurrency theft, addressing the inconsistencies in responses across various jurisdictions. Gottheimer pointed out that victims currently have limited recourse, and this initiative would establish a single federal contact for assistance. The creation of this task force is positioned as a necessary step to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in tackling crypto theft, with a voluntary approach that respects local jurisdiction. Previously, the DOJ had its own National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team, which was disbanded under the Trump administration, while the Biden administration has initiated other collaborative efforts to combat related cybercrimes. The legislative proposal’s future remains uncertain as it navigates the busy congressional landscape, needing to either pass through a House committee or be included in essential legislative packages. The Digital Chamber, an organization advocating for crypto policy, highlighted the importance of equipping law enforcement with the necessary resources to effectively investigate theft and protect victims.
